Lucifer, was the most beautiful of God’s created creatures. He became enchanted by his own beauty and power, and wanted God’s position Ezek. 28 and Isa. 14:13-14. He is cast from favour, Isaiah 14:12 & Isa. 14:25. His name is changed after his rebellion, to Satan, and he is allowed to try to stop trust and faith in God on Earth, (Job). This process is still under way, and will not end until the events described in Rev. 20:2; which is the beginning of Satan's final demise; (see: Satan's Demise!) and is thousands of years after Jesus Christ's Calvary execution!
The Old Testament (OT) shows that Satan has free-will which showed in the Garden of Eden in Genesis, but it is surmised that his existence is much older. Scripture refers to him as the Covering Cherub of an earlier situation, Ezek. 28:14 (in the KJV, the "art" should be translated "wast"), hence the supposition that Satan in his earlier pre-rebellious mode was an appointed trustee by Almighty God which he reneged against.
When Satan's successful attack on Eve and Adam took place, God gave a prophecy that Satan would be defeated by "the seed of the Woman" (Gen. 3:15), which produced in Satan a vicious attack on the females on Earth, in the form of "fallen angels" leaving their "proper position"; which they did in the mode of mating with many human females, and producing monstrosities called "Nephilim"; creatures of great size, strength and evil intent, with the object of overwhelming the seed of Eve, of whom the Divine Promise was focused!
This attack was thwarted by "The Flood" and the "slaughters carried out by Saul and David", and later some by Joshua.
After the "Birth, Death and Resurrection of Christ Jesus" (in which Satan hoped for victory); It became clear that he had failed again in thwarting God's purpose re. Saving the human race; which had for much of the Old Testament been focussed on the "Chosen People" the Jews; which was formalised in the 1st. Covenant with Abram, Isaac, and Jacob; and which Satan worked hard to turn God's people away from their vows to Him!
The sad history of the Jewish rebellion is succinctly summarised in Malachi, with the details scattered throughout the Old Testament; and in Paul's efforts to change their minds, and behaviour, leading to their current position of "Lo-Ammi" (not My people), which will remain until the events of Zech. 12:10!
Satan's latest efforts are to stop the progress of Israel in the "Promised Land"; by all means possible, but most noticeably by physical force and annihilation, which has shown strong action lately!
Satan is aware of God's promise to "Save Israel"; and that He has said overtly that Israel will never not exist (see Jer. 31:35-37); so Satan is using all his whiles to ensure that God's Promise will be broken!!
